G’day,
I have a family with a glazed door.
I would like to show the door in a open position in 3d and in a closed position in 2d views
I was going to have one open and one closed door in the family
But I can not turn the closed door off in a 3d view by way of view graphics
Is there a way I can have a nested family with a different sub-category eg: “door closed” and “door open”
Or any other way to get there?
thanks for your help
robert.
This way I can have the two families inserted and turn them on or off as required

If you always want to show your doors open in 3D this is relatively simple, and basically the opposite of what we have setup.
(we have an adjustable swing in 2D, then the door is shown close in 3D/elevation/section)
You need to model the door panel as a nested family in the open position. Select the panel and in its properties set it to be turned off in plan and when cut in plan (possibly in elevation & section as well depending on how you want to see it). Then just draw the 2D representation in plan using symbolic lines and/or detail components (if you need to have any filled regions).
Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks Mate,
Your blood is worth bottling.
i need all this for external bifold doors.
So if i model the door and park a few of these on each side that should do as far the 3d view.
i was then going to draw the 2d in symbolic lines in elev and plan, after reading your advise
the only problem with this is: no glass in a coloured shaded view and possible probs with a shaded
/ shadow elevation, i still lke to be able to do this
can i have an other nested family of the doors in a closed posi?
any opinion on this?
the nested family would have parameters for the width and the height
would they be overwritten by the host parameters of the same name or could they be derived from same
with a formula eg "width nestfam" = "wdith host fam"?
thanks so much for your time and effort

Here's where it becomes a bit more difficult. You could model the panels both open and closed. The closed would be visibile in elevation and section only, however as you may be aware you cannot control its visibility in 3D using the same method. Its either on or off, and this will effect all your othographic projections.
Good thinking regarding using the sub-categories for the nested panel that you don't want to see in 3D, that should work. That way you can control the 3D visibility of that element in that specific view.
To control the parameters of the nested families they simply need to be linked through to parameters in the host file by using the button located next to the value in family. It doesn't matter if they are called the same thing.

tanks mate
for the quick responce.
is it actually possible to insert a family of a sub-catogory, into a host of the main catogory?
eg: insert "doors open" into "doors" catagory.
if this works, it will be great, because , one could have a view template called "doors open" and one "doors closed", this would then close or open all your doors
thanks again,
bob.

If there are sub-categories in a nested family they'll persist in the main project. If for instance you created your door panels as generic models nested into a door family, set to sub-categories for doors open.
Then, in the project all you need to do would be to navigate to your visibilty settings, expand generic models and turn off the doors open subcategory.

thanks mate,
the subcatatogries work best.
one has to create a 3d view viewtemplate which has the 2d doors turned off.
by the way is there a way to create a default tempate which is used by revit
every time one creates a 3d view? in this case it would be handy if any 2d sub catagories would be
automatically switched off.
thanks again for your quick responce

I don't believe you can force the saved view template to automatically be used for each 3D view that is created. You may still need to apply the template each time.
Best bet would be to set it up in your template file. For iso views you have to duplicate or rename the base 3D that revit creates anyway so i can't imagine there would be too much work in applying the view template. View templates can also be applied to multiple views at a time.
