I am looking for an efficient way to save out a local file away from the central file to perform some design options w/o using the actual Design Options option (trying to change the materials on the skin of the building for presentations in the 'value engineering' process) After saving the file detached from cental all hell breaks loose w/ both the Central and other file (ie. error telling me the file must be manually updated by Administator, file can't be located) Why are the Revit Gods so mad at me? Does it matter from which file (local or central) I try to save out a new file under? Should I go into a 3D wireframe and copy the geometry into a new file? Design Options or the paint command? Should I quit using Revit because I'm not worthy?

The Revit Gods are not angry, just a little upset. Here’s the scoop. You can't copy a local or central file because once it’s save them as a local or central file in the first place Revit get very possessive and wants to keep all it parts intact. So it you try to brake it, it will get angry. However, if you open your local file and click save as and at the bottom of the property box you should see Options……..Click on Options and then click Make this the Central File (Not sure if its worded exactly like that). Call if something else and now you can do anything you like to this file.

So it is now it's own central file under a different name and won't refer back to the original central file? The other thing I tried was to open the central file and before doing anything else I Save As a different name and check the box 'Detach from Central' while it seems like the most logical approach that method gives the most problems yet. Anyway thanks for the advise I'll give it a go.

Excellent. This forum is great, as I hardly ever have to ask a question, someone else has asked it before I arrived and the solution is just sitting there for me to read.

I was afraid turning this into a central file would make it THE central file as opposed to a seperate file alltogether. Thank you very much.
