what is the way to create column with plaster?.......actually "why columns have no layers? After all, they are made from several materials, starting with concrete, plaster, paint, maybe some other covering option etc."

When you create the family for the column, Make sure that you have selected a material for each part of the family. If you are using a column that you have got from somewhere else, just do the same thing by editing the family after you load it into the project. Remember the name the materials for the column so that you can find them once you load them back into the project!! Hope this helps

There are two kinds of columns, structural and architectural. Structural columns do not interact with walls. It is assumed that you build walls up to and stop when they reach a column. Architectural columns will join walls that it comes into contact. This means if your wall has a plaster finish the column will acquire one as well. Try it, take a wall and via Modelling menu > Column, place one and move it so it touches or overlaps your wall. Take a look at the column using Thin Lines or change the scale of the view so you can see the linework more clearly. Oh, if these columns are free standing you can paint a finish on the surface of the columns or add a skin to the column family so it can have a material assigned. Following on from Steve's post, there is also an option to disable this.
