Any suggestions on how to go about placing a fireplace and chimney into a model? I can imagine a family would be used to create a variable sized firebox (any of these around), but what strategy would be used to develop a chimney that is visible from inside & outside and penetrates the roof plane? I may sound lazy, but this seems like a pretty involved task (as it would be in real construction). Thanks for the thoughts -OSir

I would probably construct it as a generic model and then just create an opening in the ceiling where the chimney penetrates the ceiling. Either generic or inplace... or just using walls etc.

Thanks for the direction. To further, do you think you would break the wall where the chimney was inserted, or just let it run through? And for a sloped side chimney, is there a function similar to the "Attach walls to roof' in order to attach walls to the sloped surface?

You can draw an angled reference plane and set the wall to attach to the reference plane. I'm not sure what your asking with regards to breaking the wall. I would need a sketch to see what you mean...

I guess what I am wondering is, should you stop the wall on both sides of the chimney? See sketch.

It would probably be easiest, and most correct, to use the opening tool in the modelling tab and sketch an opening in the wall where the fire place is to go...

I ended up making an In-Place Wall family for the exterior chimey that did not cut the walls, then inserted a firebox component that a fellow architect gave me that did insert itsef into the wall.
