I'm trying to edit the default overhead panel door in family editor to have windows cut into it. When I try to make an opening it just tells me that the opening is not cutting anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

could be a whole host of reasons. you really need to explain more about what you have actually done, the process followed

just download one from the revit city library that already has openings to use as an example
it may shed some light on your problem

Chances are hte garage door family already has an "opening" which is a Revit object that cuts a wall. What you are trying to add are windows or lights to the garage door family which need to be modeled as Revit objects as the "opening" is what is cutting the wall for the entire garage door family.
