In the Family Types Window, in the formula column, with a self defined parameter, I'm getting an "Only numeric parameters may be defined by formulas" warning. How do I define a parameter as numeric?

Have a look in Revit under Help! Choose Tutorials and then under Contents choose Creating Families and then Working in the Family Editor > Adding Conditional Formulas to Control.... > Creating Shelf Bracket and Shelf Coponents and scroll down and you will find this conditional formula: Thickness(default) --- 20 ---- If (Length < 1200.0 mm, 15.0 mm, If (Length > 3600.0 mm, 25.0 mm, 20.0 mm)) If you donīt need to use conditions you can instead write eg Thickness(default) ---- 20 ---- Length/100 + 10 or something else you think can suit I think AutoDesk had better to do a little video on this!!! Perhaps you know the program Sketchup they have done a lot of video tutorials Have a look here and choose video: http://www.sketchup.com/training.php THAT IS GODD! Doing parametric families is not so complicated but there is some steps to go through I have thought of doing a beginners tutorial for Revitcity but I have had no time. I think Autodesk can do video tutorials!!!! because parametric modelling is the core to Revit perhaps....

Just to help you a little more I am sending an image from the tutorial so you can find your way a little easier. And perhaps you can then do the tutorial on families for the beginner... Thanks in advance!!! PS It is a .jpg-image --- no virus can hide in .jpg images... Virus you can find in files ending on .exe and some more types ... Perhaps --- hjacobs --- can write that .jpg-images are safe.... to look at - no virus in the eye -- and download

Another tip for hjacob you can let the server make thumbnails of attached .jpg-images!!! And people will not get scared of clicking on a thumbnail And with thumbnails you still can load the topics in the User Forums quickly And you can upload all types of files - the server does thumbnails only of .jpg-images and nothing else other file-types the user has to open at own risk.... A little more programming but you have already showed that you can program so fine.. doing Revitcity. Congratulations!!!

It sounds like your adding text/values in the formula column of a text parameter. And because "only numeric parameters may be defined by formulas", you receive that message. Providing the parameter is not one of the ones programmed into the template and one you've created. Go to Family Types, select the name of the parameter on the left column and then click modify in the bottom right corner. Now you can change the type of the parameter from text to what you require...

Thanks Mr. Spot and Mr. GG. I was, as Mr. Spot noted, miss selecting the type TEXT rather than what I needed type VOLUME. I did, however need to delete the parameter rather than modify it because the TYPE selection field was greyed-out when I attempted to MODIFY.
