Go to "settings" then "options" Go to the "General" tab. Make sure you have enabled "tooltips assistance" to anything except "None"
 very important
Then go to paint bucket tool or split face tool, then hover over the resgion you have split, in a reasonable view. Crying(if you drew a facade elevation with painted surfaces, go there to inquire)) The area you split highlights, it will bring up a tooltip listing what the surface is, and if the paint command was used, it will indicate the original surface material, as well as the painted surface material.
I wanted to post you a screenshot, but I can't get the screenshot to include the pop-up tooltip! sorry!
