i have a structural revit model linked into our architectural model. i would like to be able to create an opening in a wall that belongs to the structural model that is linked into our model.

You can not do that.

If you copy monitor the structural wall, then you can cut an opening in it.

You cannot actually modify 'anything' that's in a linked model. Nor would you ever want to. Who wants people in other disciplines making changes to your model right. Tell the structural people to add an opening.
