I discovered that the material selection "standing seam roof" doesn't show the seams.
Anyway to get those lines without sketching them in?

In in shade mode you add a hatch to the material face.
If in render choose a material with the lines in

does this link it to the project so it updates with changes, or is it a manual process??

FYI
I found that the pattern "sides", from the paint bucket, works good for a standing seam roofing pattern

Auto process. once you assign that material to be your roof and have the scale of pattern how you want it.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with your phrasing "auto process".
Didn't see anything in the help menu under that terminology.
