does anyone know what controls line thickness of bottom edge of gable roof when viewed in elevation. this typically needs to be heavyest line but i have no way of changing it. in vg, when i change lineweight for the roof, the bottom edge is not affected.

yes, i am aware of all that, i was hoping for something more automatic. overriding lines is not feasible on big projects.

The linework tool will not give you the outline ONLY as you asked but perhaps you mean you only want to change the outline of the building.   If that is the case, click on the visual style button at the bottom, then the graphic display options, view must be hidden line, then under silhouettes, pick the line you want to use and apply it.  NOTE:  This will outline some elements you may not want outlined.  For those few elements, you can now use the linework tool to change these back.
