Hello people
My work place is up and running with Revit and I am getting myself familiar with the environment.
I am a long time Archicad user (1998> and a log time sketchup user (2006> . We wont mention how long ago I it was when I started with autocad or I will get a complex
I am also a keen 3d modeller using Rhino, 3dstudio Max and NVIL and a newbie with Houdini which I haven't quite got my head around yet.
I already love Revit and I am hoping to bring some of my other skills into the office pipeline using Revit as the final delivery platform so my initial questions are likely to centre around importing and integration of 3rd party assets for visualisation purposes.
I am very impressed with Enscape, so much so that I have adjusted my initial aims of using the Unreal engine for visuals and VR output (which I have been doing for a while with sketchup) and I am now concentrating on building up a library of custom objects from my existing 3D assets. These are primarily for visualisation and VR presentations and will not be used for technical documentation so although I am very interested in people's experiences with producing visuals I am humbly hoping not to be advised to model everything in Revit. Obviously I will be using Revit's tools as much as possible but I dont fancy modelling trees, cars and people
So far I have managed to model an existing double decker bus which we are coverting into a school library for charity and my colleagues will be modelling the proposals in Revit and the design will be presented to the school with Enscape on a big screen (and possibly a VR headset)
My first lingering question is how smoothing is handled and whether there are any established techniques to import 3d abjects with smoothed surfaces.

I'm not sure that using REVIT is your best tool to model vehicles smiley lol

@dgcad
What I am hoping for is a way of optimising a few models and importing them into families using Revit's level of detail functions to make them versatile for visuals. I can do the modelling with a number of tools but the best import methods and pifalls to be avoided are new territory for me. You made my day by not suggesting I model them in Revit I will keep on testing and trying things until I come up with acceptable results which I am happy to share. I have noticed that Enscape seems to automatically smooth surfaces to a degree so that may well provide results suitable for purpose.

Find a bus in the google warehouse / sketchup and import that into a REVIT family.

lol, not far off from what I did
The majority of models on the warehouse are dreadful (which is where most of the misguided opinions on Sketchup's capabilities are born)
I modelled the exact bus using photos, check dimensions an info from t'interweb
I had to import via dwg as I couldnt find any other way of getting the materials to be 'bylayer' in Revit
As you can see from the Enscape view it smoothed it using special magic (whichworries control freaks like myself)
I will have to ask Enscape support if there is anything you can do if you want things to look faceted

Not sure what you are asking. You - want faceted rather than smoothed?

Good ppoint well made
I want to be able to control/overide what gets smoothed - for instance a glass pane with shallow bevels to retain the hard edges of the bevel. If this could be acheived on a per material basis it would be very versatile but still very fast and simple to implement. Like I say, this is probably an Enscape discussion.

Use individual elements or straight-line segments.
