Hi Folks,

I am a structural engineer/revit tech with what I would consider an intermediate to advanced knowledge of revit structure. At the present, I am in the process of modeling wood roof trusses for some wood apartments that we are structural consultant for, i.e. we are working for the architect producing a set of formal structural documents where we are the structural engineer of record. The modeling of the trusses isn't that difficult, just take the stock revit truss family, change to wood framing, and attach the top chord to the roof profile. The question comes to when I have situations involving overbuild trusses to form a 'fake' dormer. Traditionally, I show the portions of the trusses under the overbuild as hidden lines to indicate the overbuild trusses above, and the overbuild trusses as solid. I'm not entirely sure of this is possbile without hiding the trusses in plan, and coming back with annotation lines as required. I considred setting up a visibility filter, but that can't necessarily be applied to just a portion of the truss (to the best of my knowledge). Has anybody had any luck getting something like this to appear right on plans? If not, any suggestions outside of what I have already mentioned would be helpful.

Also, is there some type of typical way to show roof trusses in revit? Is it typical to model in the roof trusses or just to draw them in with lines since, from my standpoint, I am not preparing shop drawings or anything like that. I have mostly worked on structural steel projects in revit, and have only done one or two wood projects in revit.

Can you create the trusses as a family? And if so, can you give the main truss an on/off parameter and the overbuild and on/off parameter so you can turn them on / off as you need to?
