I've looked through all the posts and all the issues seemed to be related to parameters causing the Can't make type error.

I don't have any parameters in my wall based family. Could it be constraints that are causing the error?  If so, how do I find out which ones?  In the error message I looked at the details and it gave me 2 ids, I tried to look those ids up but it says the ids are invalid. I'm pretty new so I could be missing something pretty obvious...

I want this family to attach to the face of the wall...was that my error?  Should I have created the family as surface based instead?

I did try creating a new project with just one wall and still got the error.

I'm using Revit 2016. Family is attached

What family type are you creating. Can you post a screenshot of the error?

Regarding the not found ID's.

Always remember that for items like filled regions, floors, roofs etc, you use sketched lines.   These lines have Revit ID numbers but those ID numbers can not be found unless you open the sketch.

I just tried loading the family again to get a screen shot of the error...and it worked!  No idea why, I didn't do anything different than the other 30 times i tried it.

Thank you WWHub that is good to know and I'm sure will help in the future.

FYI, the problem is with the constraints. The ref plane and the geometry on the right-hand side, placement side elev., are constrained with the end of the host wall. Drag the wall shape handle and you’ll see what I’m talking about. To brake the faulty constraints, cut and paste (same place) the offended ref plane, re-establish constraints (geometry with the ref plane this time - not with the end of the host wall) and it should work fine.
