Hello everybody, I just started using Revit a couple of weeks ago , so please bear with me. For now I just have a question regarding the size of the files. How do you keep them down? In other words what I'd like to know is what makes them get bigger? Is it the libraries? I've been trying to purge my file (it is a single family residence, one story, 2400 s.f.) and It does not affect the size that much. I just started adding room tags, so there is not too much information on it, no schedules yet nor any additional notes, just walls, doors, windows and furniture and my files is already 32 kb. Is this the way it is? Would it help if I don't load any furniture? or if I just use 2d furniture instead of 3d? Any help would be appreciated it. Thank you,

here is some info from Revit Guru Tom Dinmn It is not the size of the project that matters, it is how it is modeled that makes the difference. I have seen very small projects that are over-contrained with tons of in-place families or poorly contructed families make Revit look like a useless slow pig of a program. And then I have seen models we have of a 300,000 SF three story involved building that simply are not a problem. The biggest things to look at are groups. These can be a Revit problem, so make sure you do not see a lot of re-definition taking place. Another spot can be families. In-place families should simply be avoided. Other families should be created to not be "universal". I see people trying to make a door family that can be every type of door there is and the family size ballons to 2 meg when there should be more specific families to cover the doors that are each 50-100K. Site work should be done in a seperate file and the main Revit model linked into it. Any AutoCAD files should be "linked" in not "imported". And then only if they are needed. I rarely keep ACAD stuff hanging around. If I need a detail or something simply make a Revit one. Large project will require worksets. Modeling everything in 3D is not required and not a good idea. Do you have your standing seam roof modeled? I would never model the standing seams, simply use a surface pattern and a JPEG image if you need to render. What other things are in 3D that don't need to be? Are all of your toilets for example in 3D? I use 2D for toilets unless you plan to render the bathrooms. Better yet I use 2.5D which still wrok in both plan and elevation yet don't have hte 3D overhead. What about planting? If you are rendering using the Accustudio plants and not RPC's then you are going to have trouble. A 61,000 SF project is not very big for Revit to handle. I would take a look at how you are putting it together rather than to hardware problems. If you have not attended Autodesk University, it is where this type of information is presented. If you are a subscription customer, last years AU2005 sessions are out there for you to view that talk about some of this. HTH i assume you mean 32Mb and not 32 Kb Post edited on 2006-05-10 18:19:04

I am a newbee, but seems like when you uncheck both "Use OpenGL Hardware Acceleration" & "Use Overlay Planes...." It improves performance.

Big impacts on file size: In-place families that are repeated around the model. (anything repeated should always be created externally) Excessively loaded families (good well made families should be parametric enough to cover as many options as possible, less loaded families means smaller file size) Excessive views. (delete views that are not being used for any purpose. You'll often find the number of views has a huge effect on file size, sometimes more so than the actual model elements themselves) Captured renderings and loaded images. (delete and purge unneeded images) Excessive imported dwg's. (limit this by linking or just removing dwg's after they have past their use by date) That said 32MB is not a very big file. I'd expect, fully documented a building of that size to be probably be around 25-30MB also depending on the detail level of the modelling. We have a building maybe slightly bigger that is going to be an ongoing template for hundreds of jobs that is being used for asset management and has been modelled to the nth degree which is around 65MB. What is it about the file size that is concerning you? Is it the speed at using it? Or a storage issue? HTH.

Thank you for all your answers. My main corncern was speed when working and transfering data. We have a branch (another city) that help us getting the job done when we have overflow issues, and I'm not sure how to deal with these big files? At the beggining I thought the less 3D information I had the better; but I see now there are more things to look after (ie. familes). I'm just learning about worksets, but this method wouldn't work either because we won't be sharing a central file. I guess I was used to work with dwg files where I coud send pieces of my building info. and then put them together. Thanks again for your input.

Try a VPN and remote desktop. I use this to use Revit remotely and it works effectively. All you'd need would a be workstation in the office to do the computing.
