I am trying to model a curtain wall with a point supporting spider fitting and eventually a steel facade post behind. Should I model half a panel with a quarter fitting attached?

Assuming you have access to the Autodesk Subsciption site, there is a class that was taught at Autodesk University 2005 that has the technique and the spider and panel families created.
If you log-in to the subscription center, click on the AU2005 link, go to the Building Design section of classes and to:
BD41-1 : Advanced AutodeskĀ® RevitĀ® Building Techniques
Download the class handout and datasets. You can also view a recording of the class which is well worth the 3 hours of time it will take.
