Hi I hope someone can help me with something. Im constructing a dealership and in some areas i have drop down ceiling and i can place lights in there fine. But in some areas like the garage or showroom theres only a roof, and revit wont allow me to place any lights in without a ceiling. How can i by pass this. I dont want my garage or showroom to have a ceiling. By the way im trying to place my lights in the ceiling plans, not the floor plans. Post edited on 2006-04-21 16:44:28

If you are using a family that is looking for a "ceiling" host, then you will need a ceiling to place the fixture. The long method to fix is to make a non-hosted version of the fixture that you then next into various hosted types of families. The short fix would be to place a "dummy" ceiling where you want the lights that are on the underside of your roof to be. If you do this, make it a "basic" ceiling with not thickness or surface patterns and it should work out OK. Be careful though if you are doing any ceiling schedules so you filter out the dummy ceilings you placed in your model. HTH Tom

As suggested, I have tried to edit the family of lights so they are not tied to a ceiling, but with little success.   Could you please describe what should be modified and how to break this link.   Once broken can the fixture then be attached to a mass, roof or structural element or just a level?

what I do is copy the model of the light fixture from the hosted family to a non hosted generic family. then change the family category under settings to light fixture. If it's non hosted, you can place it anywhere really. It will host to the level you place it in, but you can move it around quite freely rather than being constrained to the ceiling.

I recall making a non-hosted light for the same reasons.  I recall opening the family and just delete the ceiling in the family.  I guess it also works the same for wall hosted families
