So, I am at a impass, trying to determine which is better for hosting electrical families. Wall hosted or Surface hosted?

i would use surface hosted as often electrical families are hosted by milwork and other similar type elements

How would i get the symbol to show up? like for a standard outlet.

I think you need to look at the way face based and wall based families work. If you are doing electrical outlets and switches mounted on walls, wall based families are usually the best because of placement in plan views. There are times when you will need a face based family for under counter or on other elements instead of walls. So I prefer two different families.

We usually use wall based outlets. but occasionally we have to put outlets on wainscots or wall sweeps, wall sweeps etc. so thats where this kinda all came about

I always do wainscots as a thin wall joined to my main wall. Of course it could also be built into the main wall but that causes problems at crossing walls so the thin wall works best. I would never use a sweep for a wainscot.
