Hello...
Please see image attached...'Stone Detail Stepped'... How can i acheive this in the model.
I have put an inplace model together [under wall] but it will not attach where i need and its a clumsy work around..
Any assistance has to how to achieve this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

looks like an octagonal spire there.
have you thought about modelling the inplace family as 1 complete side
with the 4 arches
with appropriate angled void cuts each end (68 degrees)
and then run a profile like a crown moulding around the top.

I did each on individually and joined them but its really labour intensive and this detail runs around the entire building so time wise its not something i wanted to be particularly heavy to detail.
There are 2 towers and 360degs of parapet that require this detail.
Am thinking your approach is correct though...

I would create a wall type that has the thickness steps defined in the wall type. This wall will then join correctly at all corners. For the arches, I would use a face based void family that is placed on the thickest part of the wall and set to cut the wall back as required. This family could then be copied along the face of the wall as required.
The above process would mean you would still have to material paint the sides of the steps and the face of the void cut area. Your bigest problem with this will be aligning all of the material joint lines.

Face based void family looks to be the winner.
Do you have a link to any decent videos [youtube] etc...?
Or even just a written example on a blog...i have source one or two but if you know of a deadpan discription that would be appreciated.

Use the face based template, sketch a void (arch) that has a parametric depth setting going into the host then pick the void to cut the host.
I have fully parametric rectangular families in our library. They are useful for wall niches, floor depressions or even just fully cutting a host.
