REVIT 2016
Can't get a residentail railing to end at the post as needed. See attached pdf. Need the hand rail to extend slightly past the post.

If just that top portion is the handrail, the handrail can be sketched to do that. Another option is to use a handrail termination.
rail extension path
- Select the rail with the extension you wish to modify.
- On the Continuous Rail panel, click (Edit Rail).
- On the Tools panel, click (Edit Path).
- Optionally, display the Workplane Viewer and use the drawing tools to modify the extension path. See Define a Continuous Rail Extension.

Still have not gotten anywhere with this. I don't understand your answer.
I don't see and "edit rail" button to click on. I have attacvhed a revit file  REVIT 17 LT) of the offending railing.
