Okay I tried doing this with Revit and Max 2014 and now with Revit and Max 2017. Whenever I try to import an FBX in Max which was exported from Revit for the purposes of rendering, my Max crases before the model even loads up. It works fine if I export as dwg from Revit and then link that dwg into Max, but FBX does not at all seems to be working for me. What could cause this? My revit file has a bunch of links and nested linked revit files.

One way to make this workflow efficient (and error free) is ensure that you isolate sections of your model in separate 3D views, and export them in those chunks to FBX. From there, when importing into max, you have options for grouping elements by material which can help futher consolidate elements into easily selectable chunks for rendering. You could be simply overloading max with your export so I would try these steps to see if you have any better luck. I'm thinking you will ;-) Cheers.
