I have had this problem before too (its particularly irritating when working from a model of existing conditions modeled from point clouds, and I no longer have a reference for what the existing wall's exact position should have been). A workaround for this that I have used is putting elements the existing walls into a design option (where there is only one option holding the existing walls and hosted elements) and setting them to disallow join. This way when I draw in the new walls, the design option elements (existing walls) are not joinable and are also not editable, so their original positions will not change. It usually has worked if I also forgot to set the existing wall to disallow join and accidentally join a new wall and unjoin - it typically returns to its original position... Not sure if I've misunderstood your original post and this is not a viable solution for you. Hopefully I might have helped!

After following this thread a little longer, I thought of another idea that might help you. Don’t know if you’ve explored this, but Grouping may work for you in this situation. My thought is that if you group your existing walls together, you can create new walls that will join to the grouped walls, but will also allow you to move that new walls away from the groups walls without affecting the group. You will get an error message indicating that Revit can’t keep elements joined, but in one click you can disallow the join.  Seems like a simpler workflow than individually toggling the join condition at each individual wall end. Plus, when you move the new walls back to intersect with the group, they’ll automatically join. Hope this helps. Good luck.
