I am creating some wall based plumbing families using the metric template provided. I have the problem that when I insert the object into another drawing all the components move all over the place. I understand that this is a constraints issue. However I don't understand how to resolve it. Surely I could just group all the objects and use a dimension to lock them to the back plane? This dosen't work, do I have to individually lock all the parts to the back plane? Eg. the seat, the cistern etc? This seems time consuming and onerous, especially as some of them will not associate..eg circular items. This happens as well for all the symbolic lines that I draw. I have tried searching for some tutorial in the Revit help files and on line but to no avail. Anyone got any ideas? I am making a bit of Austrailan based content and will upload it once I have got this worked out. (bribery perhaps)

What I have done in the past is to create the modeled geometry for fixture in a non-wall based family and then load that into another wall-based family which also contained my symbolic lines and area lines for the fixture. This kept all the geometries in the right locations and prevented errors where the geometries would interfere with one another. If I needed the family to still be parametric, I would link the parameters from the NON-wall based family to the same parameters in the wall-based family. I chose to go this route since I have encountered problems when objects are grouped and constrained.

Really? That all sounds very confusing especially with file management. I can't find any tutorials anywhere about this.

don't know why it's doing it, can you please post your family in question?

Sure thing.... I just don't understand how you are supposed to constrain extrusions with dimensions as when you pick an extrusion it only constrains the line you pick, not the whole extrusion. Therfore if you wanted to constrain a box you would have to constrain 4 lines? Any help would be appreciated. Please find attached toilet file...I have not really constrained any of the elements in this file. When I insert this toilet into a new drawing part of the base and the cistern detach themselves from the wall...it's driving me CRAZY!

This reply is for people who search this thread in the Future as I couldn't find any reference to this procedure in the documantation. If anyone disagrees with the below procedure, please set me straight. =) I found out the solution to my problem through trial and error and help from eldados Do not use dimension constraints, except to constrain one reference plane to another. Align the elements to the applicable reference plane (in wall based geometry this is usually the back plane) To do this: highlight the geometry grab the shape handle and drag it off the reference plane drag it back to the reference plane where it was before An open padlock symbol will appear Click the padlock to lock the element If the particilar geometry doesn't have shape handles when you pick it (for example a sweep): Pick the sweep, choose edit. Pick the sweep path, move the end off the reference plane move the end back to the reference plane An open padlock symbol will appear Click the padlock to lock the element Simple when you know how.
