Here’s the workflow and the problem:

1.    Created a new phase before “Existing”. For this workflow example, I’ll refer to that phase as “Pre-Existing

2.    Elements constructed in this “Pre-Existing” Phase are demolished in “Existing” Phase.

3.    Copy/Paste Exterior finished walls in “New Construction” Phase to this “Pre-Existing” Phase. Consequently, Windows and Doors are Copy/Pasted along with Walls.

4.    Change Demolition Phase of those Walls (Windows and Doors included) to “Existing”.

5.    Change Wall Type in “Pre-Existing” (to core only type; no finish or façade).

6.    ERROR: “Infilling element replaced by a later phase insert must be the same type as the insert's host.” Okay, so Revit won’t allow me to change the Wall Type.

7.    Repeat #3, but this time, split the Walls at Doors, and Copy/Paste only Walls with Windows to “Pre-Existing”.

8.    Change Wall Type in “Pre-Existing” (to core only type; no finish or façade). Wall change successful. No errors.

9.    Now – my question is: how the heck can I do the same thing with Walls that have Doors??? I have tried several approaches, all returning the ERROR: “Infilling element replaced by a later phase insert must be the same type as the insert's host.

Please tell me that there is a better solution than the lame-curse workaround I’ve found: recreating those Wall/Door instances from scratch in the “Pre-Existing” Phase.

Have you tried just changing the demo phase of the walls to existing and leaving the doors and windows as they are. To me it would make sense that the doors and windows will automatically change when demoing a wall. By the error you are getting it sounds like revit is trying to create the infills for the doors and walls but since the wall they were hosted in is being demoed and you are putting a new wall in the same place it cannot place the infill in the original host.

You have to think differently about Revit phases than we normally do.  The first rule to understant is basically, there are only two 'phases', existing and new.  We are really talking about visibility here, not our conventional project phasing.

  • EXISTING - exactly what it says - something that is there when you start (something in a previous phase)
  • NEW - What is added or changed.
  • You can have as many NEW phases as you want but each time you switch to a new phase, all previous items are now existing.

So consequently, there is never any activity in existing phase.  You only really demo in the new phase and you only build in a new phase.  If you want to demo in a phase called demo, then fine - but it will be a new phase at the beginning with all existing items being in the original 'EXISTING' phase.  Then you can create something like Phase I where everything preceeding is 'previous' in phase filter settings which in this case would be your original existing and your demo.

You can still have a 'phase' called demo but no need.  If you create in Existing and demo in new, a view setting of new phase/show previos + demo will work for your 'demo phase' and a setting of new phase/show previous + new works for your new items without demo.

Thanks for your time, guys. From your responses, I can tell there is some confusion about what I am posting about. If you read my workflow carefully, it describes a process of creating 2 phases which are independent and segregated from subsequent project phases. Call them what you will, but they are essentially a “construction” phase and a “demolition” phase. Neither of these 2 phases have any elements in them that carry forward or impact on subsequent phases of the project, which already exist. Yes: this is about visibility only, and specifically about getting plan view representations of the exterior walls/openings in stick-frame (e.g. stud core only). There are several approaches to accomplish this task. In this case, copying and pasting the Project’s walls to pre-existing Construction/Demo phase(s), and then changing the Wall Type there, was determined the best. And, by and large, this approach works well – except for when copying and pasting walls with Doors/Infills. This has been an “Oldie but Goodie” topic on these forums for many years.

Here’s the solution I’ve found, and one I haven’t seen posted before: When you try to change the Wall Type of a copied Wall with Door/Infill, as I indicate in #9 of my workflow, Revit returns an “Error – cannot be ignored” dialogue box saying: “Infilling element replaced by a later phase insert must be the same type as the insert's host.” At this point, press “Expand>>” and in the “Messages” Dialogue Box, check and delete the “Error” wall listed. Note that these Error walls listed have an Element ID that is different from the Source and Copy Walls in Project. Once you delete them, Revit automatically completes the Wall Type change.
