Okay, embarassed to be asking this one--I just upgraded to 2016 and can't get materials to work right across linked files.

It used to be that linked files would inherit the material properties from the file they are linked into.  For example, changes made to Site - Grass in a site file should override the Site - Grass settings of a a building linked into it.

Correct? At least that's how it used to work, but I am now hitting my head against a wall. Have they hidden linked file materials somewhere and made them independant?

Edit: Even transfering project standards and bringing in the linked model's unique materials no longer permits me to override the link model's materials from the material manager of the master file.

I have not checked this out yet in 2016 or even 15.   Old rule was materials of the same exact name - the host file rules and you can not assign new materials to a linked element ... but obviously, we could change the way that material looked.

Dang. That no longer seems to be the case.

I wish they didn't screw with the materials interface every. single. release.

As far as I can see, you are correct.  Still testing.   This problem may be assets as well as material .....
