Using REVIT 2016.     Trying to create a handrail with a custom profile.     I made the profile loaded it into the project. (I tried two different templates, Profile.rft and Profile-Rail.rft) neither worked.

I can see the profile in the project browser under "Profiles".    But when edit the railing family, under Handrail 1,  the new profile is not a choice.

What obvious thing am I missing?

Thanks,

JK

Assuming that you have not purged all families i can suggest the following. See what prodiles you have available in that tool. Locate them on the family browser (they should be listed with the same name you see in the railing tool). Edit one of them by selecting it on the family browser, save as a new name. (That is to duplicate the profile family that is working) Make your new geometry in the new profileand load it into your project. You should be in theory able to locate your new profile now.

If nobody ha messed with your template, then the railing profile will be correctly set to railing and after loading, it will show up in the profile dropdown when you define your railing.

Thanks for the replys.  Was skipping a step. I made profile correctly but then when directly to the railing type.  I need to make the Handrail type first and THEN use the hand rail type in the railing family.
