How do you rotate surface pattern on stair treads and landings?

well, if your surface pattern is a model hatch instead of a drafting hatch, you can select a line of the hatch (may requiring hitting tab a few times) and then rotate or align your selected line with some model feature, like a tread nosing.
This is also going to rotate any render material associated with the hatch, FYI.

That is exactly my problem. It is a model pattern, hit tab, was able to pick the line, but it can not rotate or move.
