I want to create a component that has a material and paramentric width and length. it can be placed into a wall, and will cut or void the part of the wall that it sits in.  for example if i have a wall with stone covering, i want to place a panel of wood.  the component should cut the stone and show its wood.

in the example attached, the component recesses the wall. i'd like it to cut the wall

any ideas will be greatly appreciated

You can set the wall up with sweeps.

thats a great idea.

however i'm still having trouble.  i created the profile to cut the wall but that it should be recessed in.  in plan it works, you can see the wood material cutting into the wall, but in elevation its not cutting the wall.  the join and cut tool don't help.

any suggestions?

It looks to me like it is working but you have not marked this up to show what is what.  An image of your wall setup with section would help us understand.
