I have a whole bunch of .pat files / hatch patterns that needs to be renamed. What's the easiest way of viewing the contents of the file without the need to open it in CAD programs? Any third party applications? I just want to rename hundreds of .pat files but I dont want to open every single one of them just to see the pattern and give it a name.

Sorry - no.   It has to be in a program to see what it is.  (Why 100's of files?  Seems illogical.)

I personally think that names only solve part of the issue.  I think the best way to laod and use pat files is from a resource project.  We have a resource project that is just fill patters.   Each pattern is used in a filled region that is named and shown in a view along with the recommended load scale.   To use, we open the resource project in the same Revit session as our project, open the view with the regions, pick one and copy it to clipboard.  Then pasting that in any view give us both the filled region and the pattern. ...of course you can then just delete that region from that view.  Partial view of our ref project.

I've downloaded these .pat files and there's really a whole bunch. I'm getting rid of some of them but I just feel lazy opening each file.

I just found this link on another forum. The program is called "HatchKit" by "Cadro". Seems to be working great. You can preview and edit the hatch in preview mode. The only bad thing is in the Trial version the word "HATCHKIT" is stamped across the hatch.
