In the attached file I'm trying to modify the subelements to change the elevations of the points. I started by splitting the face of the slab then added the points. When I start changing the elevation of the points it starts throwing away the split faces, adding a bunch of garbage lines and generaly making a mess of everything. What am I doing wrong and how do I fix this?
I'm using Revit 2014

Not sure why you would split the face of the slab.
Whenever you add a point, Revit will draw new lines because there will be new resulting facets. This is explained in your HELP: "By specifying the elevation of these points, you split the surface into sub-regions that can slope independently."
