I've created a custom wood slat ceiling model by creating a modular generic model of a 1' length of the slats, then modeling-in-place a ceiling in each room/area where the ceiling feature is to go and bringing in the slat family and copying as needed. Revit obviously recognizes this now as a solid ceiling component, but when I go to place 1x4 troffer light fixtures (ceiling-hosted) in the slat ceiling, it doesn't want to select this ceiling. (there's actually a gyp-board ceiling above it and it will select it, but when I hide the gyp ceiling it won't place on the slat ceiling. Any ideas as to what's gone wrong/how I can get the light fixtures placed and cutting through the slat ceiling feature? I'm at a loss.

Do you see ceilings as an available category in the family editor (image)?  I sure don't so your statement "...Revit obviously recognizes this now as a solid ceiling component..." is not true - sorry.

You will find that you should never really model small repetative items like slates, gratings, perforated panels, etc.  Instead you should be assigning a material and use detail components where needed.
