So many possibilities....

  1. What category is this missing 'furniture' in?  Many users build families in the wrong category.   What ever category may not be on in that view's VG.
  2. Were the items hidden in view?  Hit the lightbulb.
  3. We the items placed in a different phase?  Check the property of the item in a view where you can see them.
  4. Could the item be in a different workset?
  5. Could the item be in a design option?
  6. Could the items be above the cut plane of your plan view?

I had the same problem before. Turns out that the family is set so that it is not visible based on detail setttings (coarse, medium, fine).

At the bottom left hand corner you should see a checkerboard or a white box beside the cube. Click on it to change the detail settings.

Also fix your family by clicking on the parts that you want visible in your model. Go to visibility/graphic in the properties tab and check the detail level coarse/medium, etc. according to your needs.

The family may be only 3D and turned off in plans.  Look at the family visibility settings.
