I have a very detailed 3ds vehicle that id like to import and integrate into Revit. By integrate I'd like to be able to change the color of the vehicle for rendering purposes.

I have found ways on youtube to import 3ds into revit but the model isnt render worthy. I think this is attributed to the compression of polylines i have to do within 3dsMax.

I have seen alot of good vehicle models within in this website especially from a user named bradley911. Do they model those within revit? or Export from say a 3ds like program?

My question is: Am i missing something? Is bringing a render worthy "editable" vehicle from 3ds to revit possible?

Thanks for any input,

-Andrew

I don't understand... The HELP button (? Questionmark)  Is at the top right of the revit screen.  Press that and search 3DS Max and you find this:

Thanks for your quick reply,

I have read this article before and it has helped me with importing my entire project into 3ds max. Unfortuntely, at this time im not comfortable with 3ds max to produce final renderings yet.

My particular situation is that i need to to do the exact opposite. I need to go from having a model within 3ds Max and importing it into Revit.

I have found ways to do this via youtube and other online sources but I'm having difficulty preserving the quality and editablity of the model while exporting into revit.

I was curious if there was a way to accomplish this transition while still preserving the quality and editablitiy of the model.

My appologies if I was unclear before.

-Andrew

Yeah, I followed his steps. Worked alright but big downside is that you can't edit the colors of the boat hull, railing...etc. All comes in as a grey blob to my limited understanding.

Thank you again for your help, ill have to do some more digging. Or just learn 3ds Max.

I didn't watch that whole video.  If the resultant file is a DWG and you import that into a Revit family, then you can control the materials by layer.

@dimv:

The thing about 3ds models is that 3ds relies on triangulation unlike Revit. In order to change the materials you have to go back to your original model and seperate your layers by material. After you import your new model you go to Object styles and change your material accordingly. You should be able to find it under 'Imported Objects'.

PS: For your convienience you should name your layers unique to the rest of your project so it doesn't interfere with layers with the same name.

If you object comes out a big black blob, you click the 'Thin Lines' button at the top. (beside the section and 3D house button)

The next time you make a model or family from scratch and you want to use it in Revit, make it on Revit. Adjusting parameters and material would be so much easier.
