Revit 2014

When I export a Room/Area report, it only notes the are for particular families of window, and some do not register/get counted/measured. The "Report window area..." option being selected.

Can anyone suggest what the cause might be ?

Do I need to change something in my window families to ensure they are noted, and if so what?

The "help" doesn't seem to go into this in any detail.

Also, how can I modify the report to get window area dependant on orientation, say north facing windows/south/east west?

Thank you.

The cause is the windows don't have the same shared parameters and or possibly some windows are not even windows.   Only you can look at these because we don't know what you are using.

OK, Thank you for that.

I appreciate that it isn't easy without looking at the models, but, given there are many families involved (and several projects) I didn't think I could expect anyone to look through them all.

Is there anywhere I can find out what tells me which parameters need to be shared, (and why - how are they used in the calculations)? I cannot find any detailed help on using this feature, and would really appreciate knowing what parameters it uses.

I take it from your second comment that glazed doors would be uncounted, so would have to be created as windows, and the same would apply to curtain walls. That makes sense, but isn't the issue for these, as they are window families, but definitely worth noting, thanks.

First you need some background on parameters and I suggest you read this: http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2014/ENU/?guid=GUID-E7D12B71-C50D-46D8-886B-8E0C2B285988

Only shared parameters can be scheduled and tagged.  Shared parameters are very special.   They are not just a name which fools a lot of beginners.  You can have a shared parameter in a family called 'XXX' and a shared parameter in another family called 'XXX' and they will not schedule in the same column.  They are different.  So if you have a window with a shared parameter that is not stock, you need to put that parameter in a shared parameter file so you can use it on other windows.  Here is the process for that:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2014/ENU/?guid=GUID-AD648C07-0C2F-478D-AD9D-4F9A5FF515E6

Some of what you ask is easily discovered by doing these things:

  1. Open the window template which I have shown in the image below.   Here are the stock window parameters.
  2. Open a stock window like the second image.   Now you see a lot more parameters but if you examine most of these you will see they are family, not shared parameters.
  3. Open a blank project, place a wall with a window then start your window schedule.  Now you will see what shared parameters are available with the window you used.

You asked: "...how are they used in the calculations...?"  In the family?  Look there.  In a schedule?  Look there.

You also wrote: "...I take it from your second comment that glazed doors would be uncounted, so would have to be created as window..."  You are now asking a completely different question.  Your question was about scheduling windows but I don't think that is what you are doing.  Are you scheduling glazing?  ... Windows are windows, doors are doors and curtain walls are.....

All different categories and these categories don't have very many shared parameters that are the same.   So you now place a door in your test project (I used commercial template) and using a multi-category schedule you see the next image. Note you see Glazing type and Glazing thickness.  Those could be what you want but no glass area.

I added a curtainwall to my test project and did my schedule.   Last image.   I had to edit the type of the window to change the glazing but this information is not available in doors or curtainwall.  So what do we do?  If ou look under project parameters, you see you already have the two glazing parameters but they are only assigned to windows.  Add curtain wall panels and doors and you can now use those.   Create a new shared parameter called glazing area, add it to door / window families then open the family and add the proper calculation.

Thank you WWHub, for your detailed reply. Sorry I did not reply straight away, as work meant I was unable to really sit down and look at what you were saying.

Now that I have, I am not sure that we are talking about the same thing.

I am not trying to do a window schedule, or to export a schedule, rather I want to export the Room Area Triangulation Report as found under Export>Reports>Room Area Report

You are right, I miss read your question.

I had never tried this process but I did now and it works.  The window is not reported under area - only under room.  Curtain walls do not seem to report.

It doesn't really surprise me that not everyone uses it, as isn't exactly a widely discussed feature. The reference to it in online help is minimal too. I am not sure what is the point of the  comment that "This functionality is primarily intended for European users."

But if I can get it to work for all windows (not curtain walls) it would make Building Code compliance calculations a lot easier to do.  Especially if I could get it to separate windows for particular orientations, but I suspect that isn't going to be straightforward.

Glazed doors are another difficulty.
