i inherited a wall type (dont know where from) that has the handy characterisitc that when the comment parameter is "new" or "NEW" it shades in gray in plan view. Other wall types dont do it. How do I replicate that behavior? Other fill types possible?

Your wall has a filter applied that overrides the cut pattern. Type VV and click on Filter tab. Also, see this.
