I use Revit 2011 and when I try to download bim objects, I get a message "file was created in a later version of Revit" for many objects.

Is there any way around this other than paying for upgrades?

Revit is not backwards compatible. Files created in later versions cannot be open in the earlier ones. Software upgrade is the only way.
