Is there a way to lock a complex element to a reference plane within a family? Example, locking a complex faucet to a reference plane that changes the height of the countertop? I've tried grouping the model elements but it won't allow me to lock them in any way.

If the faucet family is a face based family, and it is inserted on the face of a counter, it will move with the counter.

It is not a faced based family, it is the standard "plumbing fixture" template. If there is an easy way to change it to a face based family, I'm all ears.  A work around that works is saving the faucet as a separate family and inserting into the main family and locking it to a reference plane. Seems like an extra step that is not needed.

You are nesting a non-hosted plumbing family into another family.   Is that correct?

Then simply dimension where that family is in the host family from a host family element or reference plane and lock that dimension.   Your done.
