I may be in over my head on this one, but is it possible to add a component to a revit project file and have the element read the properties of a previously modeled element?

For example, adding a column baseplate that can read the column's family name or parameters.  For example, adding an end plate to a modeled beam and have the end plate align with the beam end and understand the "host" for offsets?

May be able to nest the plate family in the beam or column family and tie some of the parameters to the physical parameters of the beam or column.

I'm not really sure to extents you want this family to preform, but that is the only way i can think of getting one family to read the attributes of another and host to it.

I was hoping to not have to nest the families. . . makes it hard to use the same family on multiple jobs.
