I downloaded a lav - the Kohler Interlude - and it is not visible in plan views. It is visible in section, and in 3D views. I looked at the visibility settings in the family and I don't see anything wrong. There is no phase issue, and the view range should be OK...

Hi, I downloaded the kohler file and loaded it on a project and it worked perfectly. There it was visible on plan, elevation, section and 3D. You should check both on the individual file and on the projec the visibility properties.

Thanks for looking into it - I appreciate it. I found the problem; in plan views I had somehow cleared the visibility checkbox in Imports in Families on the imports tab of the visibility graphics panel. Whew, that was driving me crazy.
It looks like importing a .dxf file into a family would be a way to bring any geometry into Revit - say, for example, something modeled in Rhino that had an exotic form, like these plumbing fixtures...
