I created a line Based Family for a custom railing. Every time the ends get close to each other they automatically attach. Does anyone know of a way to stop this or why it’s occurring? It is not occurring everywhere ether.
I searched the forums on here and did not find a similar post. I did find similar post with no answers on Autodesk, Revitforum, and Augi.

Hit the tab key a couple of times and the snap will turn off.

Thanks for the replly WWHub. I cannot seem to get this to work. Do I select one of them first and then hover the mouse over the blue end dot that shows up and press tab?

When you place anything in Revit, your cursur will try to snap to anything there according to your sap settings.
So in your case, you start the insert/component process and get closs to where you want to start. If there is an intersection there, you will see a box and maybe endpoint. If it is a face, the item will highlite and you will see nearest.
Whatever you see, hit the tab key. If you see another box or nerest, then hit the tab key again.
You are cycling through the available naps. When nothing else shows up, then place your beginning point - stretch out to the other end and tab/tab again if you have to at that end.

I tried this and it is still doing it. I even drew a line and had it snap to the end point of it instead but it is still joining with the other element. It appears to be working much like how walls join however there is no disallow join option. I do not think its a snaping problem.

When you are in your command type SO to turn the snap off and it should line snap to anything. How close are you getting to this line that it is connecting to it? An image is always helpful

Sorry but this is a problem in your process - the process works. Read this in your HELP:
http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2014/ENU/?guid=GUID-A3947840-1F30-41D7-AF75-B61687952A07
If you still don't understand how to do this, disable snaps by clicking on the manage tab / the re magnet and checking snaps off. But I encourage you to instead, learn how to use the temporary snap setting by using the tab key.

I know all of the snap camands ss, se, sm, sp, sz ex..... this is a joining issisue not snapping. I am trying to keep them seperated at 1/2" but I have played with it and if its within an inch they join. I am thinking that I will just eddit the family to have a gap built in and then the joining will work in my favor.

Kind of hard to follow advice? I can only lead the horse to water, I can't make him drink.
Good luck.

i am having the same problem with my line based family, its a real drag. have you figured anything out for this yet? i dont want to have to build in the gap, like you had mentioned before. I feel like it should have an option, like walls, to disallow join.

I typically never have a problem with this because I don't get closer than an inch. I wish the original poster had described the problem better because turning off the snaps works until you get to within about 1" and I don't typically work in plans that close.
Perhaps you need a different approach. If you tell us what you are trying to do we may be able to offer a better solution.
I know I can't immediately think of a reason for using a line based family for a railing since that is what the system railing basically is.

I'm having the same issue with a line based family I just created...
Anytime I get two of the same family within an 1" of each other they automatically join at the ends. I too need them to be spaced accordingly...
I created the family as a line based generic family b/c the particular part shows up in seperate locations, and even the same location at different lengths. (i.e. sections between curtain wall mullions are different widths, and these parts should equal the width of the panel that it's attached to, the panels are alternating widths along the wall)
A Line based family just seemed like the easiest way to create each part without having to creat a bunch of different families of the same thing, just differnt lengths.
