when I insert a drafting view using insert from file a lot of my detail items become duplicates e.g. cmu, cmu 1, cmu 2, break line, break line 1, break line 2. instead of keeping the same name. wondering why this happens and moreso how to prevent or eleminate this?

I was waiting to see if anybody else had an answer to this because I do not.

From the family browser, one family at a time I:

  1. Right click on the family1, family 2....etc and pick all instances in the project
  2. change them all to family
  3. then I delete the family in the project.

A real pain but I do it to maintain my projects.

after doing these steps you suggest do you find yourself having to correct any of the families? for instance, I have break line, break line1, break line 2, etc. each one is stretched by the grab pints a little differently. so I have to go through each drafting view and check to see if each needs to be corrected.

No...

Breaklines stretching are all instance vaiables so they all stay 'stretched' as you set them.

I have never seen any problems swapping these families back to the ones already in the model.  Where there will be a difference are items like 'repeating brick' where someone set up one spacing and the new 'repeating detail1' might be a different spacing.   BUT this is exactly where you want to look for and see that there is a difference.
