I really like the idea of plan regions, but I think they could be a much more powerful tool.

First of all, I think they should be applicable to elevations and sections too. I understand this goes against the idea of calling it a ‘plan’ region. I also understand plans are ‘cut’ in a different way than elevations and sections. So the tool would have to be rebuilt from the ground up, but it could be rebuilt in a much more powerful way.

Let’s call them ‘view regions’ just for the sake of explanation. A view region would be a boundary in a drawing where different view template settings are applied. For example, If I had a repetitive building and wanted to show shadows on one bay of the façade, I would draw a ‘view region’ around that bay, and apply a view template with shadows on in that view.

Obviously, some things could not be edited (such as view scale). But things such as detail level, visual style, phase, etc. could be pretty useful for a number of applications.

What you describe is basically geographically controlled nested view settings. Maybe one day but I wouldn't get my hopes up.
