I have a project which was 103MB. When I performed a 'save as' with a different file name it reduced the file size by about 23MB! Why is this? Is this a good method of reducing file size or is there some other way that this should be done?

It is the best way to optimize your Revit files, because it deletes all history in the files, so there is no undo or rollback. We have begun doing it regualy on all our projects. Make sure there is no localfiles open, and everybody creates new locals before working again.

Doing a save as is essentialy the same as using the "compact file" function.   I like to use save as when I want a snapshot of the project at a certain point.  For record purposes we do this at the SD/DD/CD phases and those go in an archive folder.

There are several functions you should do to maintain your file.  Frequency is dependent on number of users/ modifications and problems.

  • Audit and compact the file
  • Review warnings - Too many users don't do this often enough.   This can correct problems and speed up the file.
  • Purge unused - only when finished!
