Hello

We were talking in the office about this setting and we don't have a clue what it is for or how to use it.

On the Ribbon

Manage > Additional Settings > Detail Level

This brings up a diaglouge box called "View Scale to Detail Level Correspondence"

The guy in my office thought this was a way to manage visibility of details in a family once they come into the project environment. I don't see how that would work.

Can someone please explain the purpose of this setting and how it is used?

Thanks

I think this is pretty self explanitory when you look at the chart that comes up but it is also explained in your HELP:

http://help.autodesk.com/view/RVT/2014/ENU/?guid=GUID-0A0C92EC-DC99-4E25-B089-605772148718

Says ..."detail level for VIEWS"...

Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions.

I never use detail levels "course" or "medium" because they don't show enough and I find they show the same thing.

I always set my views to fine.

I am unaware of a way to control what elements, either in a project or from a family, that show at different scales.

Would there be a way to tell Revit exactly what I want to see in a wall assembly, or a family at a particular scale?

Assuming I can't, this is why I don't see a purpose for the "detail level setting"

I thought the only thing scales did was adjust my line weights and the size of my annotations.

Please enlighten me if I'm wrong.

Thanks

VIEW DETAIL LEVEL!  THIS SETS THE DEFAULT VIEW DETAIL LEVEL, PER SCALE WHEN YOU CREATE A VIEW.

Many objects are created to show differently at different detail levels.  Walls - coarse only shows outermost lines, medium and fine shows outer and interior lines.  Other families have similar settings depending on how they are built.

In your case.... you will want to move all settings in this chart to fine.

I don't know why you would ever set a 1:100 drawing to fine but that's up to you.  Seems like the walls would be one fat blob!

Ok lets try again. I think I'm starting to understand.

I knew the "view detail level" sets a DEFAULT group of settings that dictate the visibility of elements in that view

I want to know if I can change that!!!!

My walls are not a fat blobs because I edited the line weight settings the walls are using under "Object Settings"

For example, I'm using a wall with exterior insulation. At 1:100 I'm showing everything in that wall assembly, which I really don't need to see but I still want to see my insulation. So to get that I have to set the level to "fine" or “medium” and just accept I'm going to see everything else as well.  See the images attached, there is almost no different between “medium” and “fine”. For Medium I would like a single line at my exterior face of core as this is important for dimensioning and such, but as it stands I see two lines for each face of the sheathing at that location. The metal siding also shows two lines on the exterior but they are so close they bleed together. My point is I’d like more control to simplify the line for my wall assembly without having to edit each line individually with the line work tool. Would that be possible?

I coming at this from a CAD point of view where I'd draw exactly what I want to see, but in Revit the "detail" settings are determining my line work for me and its not always want I want. Generally though it seems pretty good.

In Families (Think I get it)

Families I know can set an extrusion or other object to be visible based on view and detail level, but it effects the whole object. If I want to be more detailed (like only show an outline or something) I have to tell Revit to not display that object and use symbolic lines instead, correct? One example would be a plane of glass in a window, a single thicker line would be preferred.

For 3D objects I make an extrusion in a family, when I set the profile for that extrusion I cannot determine (From the family editor) what it will look like in the project. For example I make a door frame and it is cut in the project in a floor plan view. Revit is determining the line weight for that cut based on the "sub category" setting from the family editor. Then Revit looks in the project settings under “object styles” and takes the line weight and line style for that category. If I want to go deeper I can go directly to the "line weight" settings and give a different number in millimeters for the line thickness when plotted at any particular scale.

Did I miss anything?

You have individual category VG controls in every view.   Learn to use view templates.  Then the view may be coarse but walls are set to fine.

You need to learn how to build families and control them.  Line thickness per view scale in Revit is all adjusted automatically by Revit based on your line scale settings.  So once you determine what the base line thickness is and set it in your object styles your done... an item will show correctly no matter what the view scale.  Element visibility in view coarse/medium/fine view settings can be assigned to every element in a family.  So maybe you have a line set to show heavy in a coarse view but not at all in a medium / fine views.  Instead, you may have other lines set to show in those view settings.

It takes some time to get a handle on all of this but once you do, you will be forever gratefull never to have to mess with layers and colors again!
