I have noticed that sometimes when I use the linework tool to control the visibility of a family it will only let me select all the lines associated with the object rather than individual lines.  Anybody have a solution or experience this same problem?

What Revit and do you have all of the updates installed?  Can you be more specific on what families this is happening on?

2014 all updates installed.

After deleting the family and redoing the linework tool it allows me to select the individual lines.  But still having problems getting the desired visibility.  The family I am working with is a trash compactor family which I created myself. So this family sits up against a concrete wall.  In elevation I want the trash compactor to be dashed so that I can see the opening in the wall rather than the compactor itself.  Obviously i could just control the visiblity of this family to just show detail lines in elevation but there might be instances where I actually want to see the compactor, rather than hidden lines.

The way I've been trying to do it so far is use the linework tool to pick the lines that I want to see hidden, and then select the family and turn the transparency of the surface to 100% by override graphics.  In doing this I see all the remaining lines of the family that I orginally didn't want to see.  So I then change the linework tool to invisible lines but it won't hide all of the lines.  In the meantime I have just drawn detail lines on top of my family and hid the family but I'm curious now what othe people do in scenarios like this.

I would need to see your family in order to actually help you.  Can you upload it?

Why don't you create a new subcategory in the family for the model elements .  You could turn that off any any view using VG.  You could have symbollic linework (also in a sub category) that could be turned on when the solids are turned off.
