I'm working on a 2013 file that stals repeatedly. It just doesn't want to work.  There seems to be a lot of cad-connections, they now have all been removed, all of them, but the thing is still plagued.  I've perged, dealt with the warnings, etc.  Is there ANY way I can make this smaller file size and speed up the working?  Is currently 99,000k and I a need to clean it up this day.

That is not a very large file. Our project files are rarely under 120,000KB and we have no problems.

When you say "cad-connections" do you mean inserted CAD or linked.  Linked is not as much of a problem as inserted and Linked can / should be placed on seperate worksets that can be turned off or not loaded.  Inserted CAD can be really BAD when not done properly.  And often, you can't even find them all to get rid of them.  Inexperienced users often insert, then hide them.  If they are his view only" insertions, then you have to find the view they are hiding in.  CAD insertions into families can be even more of a problem.  You have to edit the family to see these.

There are add-in programs that will search your file for CAD items so they can truely be removed.  I don't have a link handy but look on the autodesk site for add-ins.

Another issue that may be slowing you down is landscape items.  They can be real hogs.

And yet another possible issue is too many view windows open and or widows with shading on.

And finally ... Have you learned how to review warnings? There will always be some warnings you can't get rid of but too many of these that are left unresolved can also cause problems.

I just took over this file a few days ago.

Seems like there was some cad imported into it and left there.  There are no landscape items in the file.  I only work with one of two windows at a time in order to keep track.  I started going through warnings.  Can I just click on them and make them deleted?

AND I see there are too many worksets, one for one for each floor floor.  is a there any way to get rid of all of these to just have the "shared levels and grids" workset?

"too many worksets" ...?  You ABSOLUTLY don't want every thing on shared levels and grids!!!  Worksets are really good tools but they can be overdone.

Here is a good discussion about how to determine that:

http://revitoped.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-many-worksets-do-i-need.html

Worksets by level don't typically make sense.  To move elements to a seperate workset

  1. Mange worksets and make the offending workset editable.
  2. Open a 3D view, in VG turn off all other worksets
  3. Window the screnn and change the workset property for all of the elements.
  4. Go back to manage worksets and delete the offending workset.

BTW - worksets are NOT your slowdown cause.

Yea?  WHy not?

I did a 106k+ SF production with TWO worksets:  Shared levels and grids, and structure.  Nothing else and it was fine.

This project is royaly screwed and I have no idea why, other than the cad whoever didn;t know what they were doing imported.  It's taking over 10 seconds to cut a LINE and 10 more to pick and 10 more to delete the line.

Sorry that I have to restate this.

WORKSETS are NOT your problem.

CAD maybe - probably ... too many locks - probably .... did you review the warnings?

This may help you: I agree with most of it.

Easy Hoss, ya, heard you the first time.

I was disagreeing with you on "you DEFINITELY DON'T WANT EVERYTHING ON SHARED LEVELS AND GRIDS."  SORRY YOU couldn't figure that out.

There's lots of "cad" in the file, as evidenced from line styles, it shows LOTS of "cad" lines.

Getting rid of the warnings is a royal pain.  Click on, it closes, you have to go in and find the next and do it again.

I read that link yesterday, it's go NO directions about what TO DO.

Once again, this DUMP proves it's totally worthless.

What is the point in having worksets if your not going to use them correctly?  If you have everything on the same workset you cant control visability so therefore you probably have modeled items on that you don't need in a view which WILL slow it down.

"Getting rid of the warnings is a royal pain.  Click on, it closes, you have to go in and find the next and do it again."  Thats why you shouldn't let your warnings go without resolving them, it is a process to get rid of them, once one is done you move on to the next, not sure why that would be a big deal for you.

"I read that link yesterday, it's go NO directions about what TO DO."  Seriously? It tells you what NOT to do, if you have a bunch of unused views delete them, if you have a bunch of warnings, resolve them, do you have a ton of unused familes, purge them. It doesn't get much clearer.

"there's lots of "cad" in the file, as evidenced from line styles, it shows LOTS of "cad" lines" If theres so much cad GET RID OF WHAT YOU DON'T NEED!

"Once again, this DUMP proves it's totally worthless."  A comment that shows your lack of Revit knowledge.  Do some reading and listen when people help you and you might learn something.

It takes awhile to learn how to do the review warnings.  I go through and do the easy deletions first.  Things like two of the same items in the same place - I check all of the second ones.  All room tags outside of rooms - I pick them all.  You can click on an item and pick show to see what it is.  When I've got enough picked, I choose delete selected and start then the process over again.  Lines slightly off axis I usually ignore.  You will just have to learn but cleaning this up will help you.

The CAD issue is something else.  We (I) have posted several times here about cleaning up exploded CAD in a dummy project before copy/pasting into your project.  Here at our office, I once deleted over 500 hatch defintions that were basically just 3-4 types but each one had a unique name because it was from exploded CAD.  Then I had to clean up all the linetypes.  A real mess! When using the project you had to scroll through all of these to find what you needed....
