Hello everyone, i'm a newbie here at RevitCity but i've been working with Revit for a few years. I'm an architect from Brazil and i'm currently developing the Template, the processes and a Tutorial (on how to use the families, schedules, etc) to the office that I work in. It's a small Architecture Firm and the desire to evolve from CAD to BIM has been present for quite a while, but only now they gave me more work time to develop all the necessary stuff.

That said, I'm having some trouble and I wonder if someone had the same kind of problem and found out some way to solve it.

When I create a Legend, or a Key Note Legend, it wont show in the Project Browser, and therefore I cant do anything with it. The blank canvas appears, but once I close it, it's forever lost. Today I found out the reason of the problem, but I cant figure it out how to solve it. Sometime in the past I must have done the huge mistake o using the comand Purge Unused. By doing that, the Legend Family (a System Family) and its Type have been erased. Now, without this family my archive is not able to create a legend. The problem is that been a System Family, I'm not able to load it again to my model/template.

What I can't grasp my mind around Is why I can erase something that I won't be able to reinsert in the future. That's why I think there's a solution tahta I just didn't see it yet.

So, can anyone help me?

Once you have created your keynote legend, close the template and try it with a test file.  Once you place some keynotes, the legend will populate.

WWHub, thanks for the reply, but I think you didn't understood what my problem is.

I'm already on a Test File and I have no Type of legend loaded in my file. A long time ago, when I was only begining to set up the template, I purged the unused itens and the legends type where gone. Now I can't create a new type.

If I crete a Keynote Legend and place some Keynotes on the model, sure, it will populate. But, since it is not showing on the Project Browser, once I close that window, it is lost forever.

Understand what I mean?

Are you possibly sorting your browser to exclude the legend?  Like views not on sheets?  The legend should be there.

BTW - When you purge unused, you should always evaluate what was selected and turn off what should not be purged.  This should never be a fully automatic operation and never used in a template!

Yes, I'm aware of that, but, two or three years ago, when I started the template, I didn't realize that and did that stupid thing. Now that the archive is much more developed and I finally got the need to work with legends, I found out that issue.

And no, I've checked the Browser and there is no Filter of any sort.

The Legend Header shows, but when I create then, they just don't...

OK.... I think your problem is that you don't understand keynote legends.   There are several settings that affect this.

  1. When you set up your legend, what did you set your legend filter to be?  first image
  2. How did you set up your keynotes?  By sheet or by project and do you have the path set right?  second image

If your answer to #1 above is filter by sheet, then a copy of the legend must be on the sheet.

If not by sheet then the legend will populate when each keynote is used.

You must have the path set to see any keynotes.

No, that's not the problem. The functionality of the legend is fine. The Bug is that it won't show on the Project Browser, and therefore, it only exists while it's window is open.

See the image atached. My Revit is in Portuguese, so: Legenda = Legend; Legenda de Nota Chave = Key Note Legend

In the top left box I have the project browser with no legend created. Then I create it on the top righ box. I the bottom box I have the Key Note Legend created and populated (I've only placed I key note just to show), but if you the Project Browser, the Legend header is still there, but no instances of the legend family where created.

So, when I close this view, It will no longer exist. Know what I mean?

OK - Lets start where I should have started.  What Revit and what updates have you installed?   Don't just say you are up to date.  Look under the question Mark ?  and the about tab and tell us what that says.

I'm currentily using a Revit 2014 - Version 20131024_2115(x64) - Uptade Release 2

But I talked to a friend that uses a template that came from the same Base Template that I do, and have the same issue, and he had already noticed the bug when he was using the Revit 2013. So I'm not sure if that involve a updating issue...

My 2014 - update 2 - new project using the commercial template.  And here is my browser showing the new keynote legend I just created.

Something has to be bad in your program.

The bad thing is not with the program. The bad thing is the Purge Unused that was made many time ago.

For example, if you do a Purge on this archive of yours, with no legends created, you'll see that one of the things that can be purged are Legend Types. If you go trought with it, then you'll have the same problem that I do.

My big problem is that I have done many things in my template that i'm not able to export to a brand new one. So, I'm trying to recover that lost Legend Type that it once had....

Are you on subscription?

We have sent problem projects to Autodesk and get a one day turn-around.

I have one more thing for you to try.

Start a new project and create your keynote legend in that.  I know for a fact that keynote legends can be "insert view from file" into another project.  See if that fixes your problem.
