Hello from sunny Portland, OR
I am working on a townhouse complex in Revit where we will eventually have to 20+ seperate files (one for each building and garage). For now, we are working on the buildings in one file, but once we reach are 90% set, the changes will be too much for design options / worksets to handle. Here is where our problem is. We will be using the same details for each building, but if something changes we don't want to change it in 20 different files.
Is there a way to link files (much like an xref) AND properly reference them in the detail tags? The latest info I could find was from 2009, seeing as that was quite a few years back, I wasn't sure if there were any advancements on this.
Thanks in advance.

I would keep all details in one file and only show those on sheets used by all your projects. Some sort of common sheets. Then that project is taken care of. For the other projects, cut your details and place them on the same numbered sheets. Don't print these sheets, use the common sheets for printing.

I believe you can link details and its not a bad alternative. Brian Mackey showed us at AU2013 last year. I think he's coming to Central States BIM workshop again in Omaha later in August of this year.

Enjoy!
