When I create an new material and apply an image that image populates itself to other material definations that on first look are not related to my new material.
As an example, I created a new "grass paving" material and imported an image. When I look at the library I see its also added the image to Generic Wall and a few others.
Also if I create a duplicate of a custom material, then change its parameters etc and apply a new image, the original material then updates its image to match the duplicated one.
I must be missing something somewhere for thsi to happen. Any advice please?

2014 has assets as well as materials. That is where your problem lies. This may help you:
