I'm currently trying to draw bathroom elevations and need to draw some basic bathroom fixtures.

I created a new "Plumbing Fixture wall based" family and drawed the Floor Plan: Ref. Level and Elevations: Left, Right, & Placement views with Symbolic Lines. When I insert the family into the model, the wall pattern (4x4 Tile) shows through the family because the regions are empty.

When I draw a masking region with hidden lines over the outline of the model, the model becomes hidden. It is my understanding masking regions can not be sent front to back. I was informed by a person I would need to create a seperate masking region with visible regions for each region. This seems inefficient and labor intensive as some families can have many regions, but maybe this person is right.

What is the best way to obscure a wall pattern behind a family drawn with symbolic lines? I was thinking Filled Region would be the best approach, but this does not appear to be an option in my family.

Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thank you in advance.

Note: I am fairly new to REVIT, but I have a fairly good grasp. I have attached my family just in case it may help.

Why don't you just use CAD?   That is what this sounds like you are trying to do.

If you want to use Revit, then place Revit walls and toilet fixtures.  There is then no need for masking regions.

Use a thin tile wall in your model and let your valve host on that.

You can create groups of face based/wall based elements that can be placed in a project and if the project walls are there, the grouped elements will find them.  Here is one of our groups shown in blue.  We keep these groups in a resource project where they can be loaded from.

Placing a thin wall would only help in the placement view. If I were to look at either the left or right views in elevation, I would then still have my original problem.

Are you suggesting I create 3D Forms with planes (wall based elements) to avoid the issue of Symbolic Lines & Masking Reions?

The Autodesk REVIT Certified person in charge of REVIT implimentation of my office suggested the use of symbolic lines to me. To his defense the project is large and I believe his intention is to save memory by using symbolic line generated families.

For what I am trying to do, should I just not use symbolic lines for families and create wall based 3D forms instead? I don't see the advantage of symbolic lines besides shrinking the file size.

I'm not sure of what you are really trying to do but here is what we did.

All of our toilet fixtures and accessory items are individual 3D families.  In some of those families, the 3D elements are turned off in certain views and replaced with 2D elements.  (For instance we use masking regions and linework for toilet fixtures which are faceted in elevation views.)   So we load these families into a "resource project" that is kept (along with others) in our library.   In that project, we have walls / floors / work planes ... as required to place these elements in a typical configuration.  We group the families but not their hosts.  Now that group can be loaded into any project and placed in a similar situation where the elements will host to the project elements.

We do thin tile walls in groups as well but for this toilet group, you could include thin tile walls and thus place those along with the other elements.   Once placed in a project, the group can be edited or ungrouped so you could say change the tile or material properties - etc.
