Generic is a category but you can start with a generic template but assign it to any category.

You can have as many tag types as you can come up with unique names for them.

I have not been able to change the category of generic tags, I've tried copy past, that doesn't work, then loading an open specific tag into generic and that doens't work either.  HOw do you do change generic to something else?

Tag categories are set in the family.  Download the "families guide" from the autodesk site.  I believe it is 2010 but still applicable.
